Designing the pond size to small is one of the most typical mistakes when planning a
garden pond. Garden pond plants and shallow pond zones often take more space as planned in your water
garden design before. All
species of fish need plenty of space for their mobility. Pond flora and fauna will grow and develop more
opulent, if there is enough room to spread. Do not plan your garden pond to small. Starting right
from the beginning with a large scale garden pond plan saves you expensive extension work
and remodelling of your garden pond after some years.
Another very common mistake is to design a water garden in the shady corner of the garden. To
provide enough direct sunlight during the day for your garden pond, without having your house' or some
tree's shadow over the water surface, is one of the main premises for a healthy growing and developing water
garden. Have also in mind that you have no deciduous tree standing close to your garden pond. Besides its
shadow, that you don't need this tree will fill your pond in autumn leaf fall and provide additional work of
pond cleaning. Therefore: Design your garden pond away from deciduous trees.
Individual pond shapes are best realized with a flexible pond liner. When laying out the flexible liner
material, make sure, that you have removed all sharp stones and roots below it. Otherwise it might
break through the pond liner. When working with the flexible pond liner take care that the folia material
doesn't gets damaged by shoes, tools or by over stretching. Typical and common weak points of
flexible pond liner design often go back to the pond construction.
Who decided to place big garden pond sculptures and gargoyles into his garden pond, has to prepare strong
foundations for heavy pond decor before laying out flexible liners or installing preformed pond
liners. After installation only light pond decor can be placed inside.
Planning and building your Garden Pond Design with a preformed fibreglass pond has the advantage, that you can
construct your water garden by yourself quick and easy. pond shells made of PVC and Polyethylene have shown
a longer durability than flexible pond liner materials. It's a common mistake, that a garden pond cannot be
filled properly and the water is flooding over on one side. This problem goes back to the Pond
Construction,
when the pond shell was not exactly balanced. To solve this in a professional way, you have to
re-install your pond shell proper balanced.
If pond shells go baggy or burst open, it is again a typical mistake, that goes back to the pond
construction. After installing the pond not all cavities besides and under the pond shell have been
filled up with sand. The pressure of tons of water causes tensions and the unequal supported pond walls show
those damages.
During heavy rains lots of nutrients are washed from the garden into the pond, if the pond shell has the
same level than the surrounding garden. To avoid this common weak point install your preformed pond about 2
inches above garden level and prepare right from the beginning a proper overflow for your garden pond.
